This week, I’ve been busy reading and reviewing books for various online groups. There are a few I belong to on Goodreads, and promising a review is a great way to score free books. I was reading my way through one, and something was bothering me. Then, I read this article on differentiating characters, posted by my helpful friend and fellow author, Jim Reader (to whom I just remembered I owe some reviewing comments, oh crap), and realized what was bothering me. Which leads me to this week’s exercise.
Exercise 3: Your characters are having a conversation/discussion/negotiation/argument. Who are they? How are they similar? How are they different? Write a short scene, paying careful attention to differentiating each of the characters through dialogue, actions, and attitudes. For a special bonus – no physical descriptions allowed. Instead, communicate the uniqueness of your characters to the reader using only their actions, dialogues, inner thoughts, etc.
